GISNY Basketball End of Season Recap

All good things must come to end.  At least for now!  The GISNY Basketball Program soared to new heights this year competing and winning at the VARSITY level this year.  The improvement and growth of the program was evident as the JV team took on the challenge of competing against Varsity teams throughout the area (highest level of competition in high school sports, usually grades 9-12).  The JV/Varsity team finished with an outstanding record of 9-3 winning their last 5 games of the season defeating strong Varsity programs of FASNY and EF International Academy.
On February 8, GISNY travelled to FASNY to compete in what ended up being an epic battle to the end.  The GISNY Eagles trailed FASNY by 8 points with 1:45 left in the game, but the team never believed that they were out of the fight.  Sophomore Anton Schlüter nailed a corner 3 pointer to cut the lead to 5.  After an ensuing loose ball battle, Paul Pfeil stole a pass and dished an assist to teammate Daniel Toeller for a fast break lay-up to make it a one possession game with :55 seconds left.  After another stop and quick bucket from Schluter, the Eagles trailed by 1 points with 10 seconds left.  FASNY went to the free throw line and missed the front end of a 1and1.  Junior Tim Collins grabbed the rebound and went the entire court to float in the game winner as time expired!  The Eagles fought back to victory and defeated FASNY in a classic thriller with a final score of 47-46.  Tim Collins finished with a game high 16 points and the game winning bucket.  Anton Schlüter chipped in with 10 points and Daniel Töller provided valuable and timely buckets and gameplay.
Two weeks later, the Varsity program faced its biggest and toughest opponent of the year tipping off against a powerful EF International Academy team.  After trailing early on in the game, the Eagles shook off the post winter break cobwebs, and took a lead in the 2nd quarter that they would never relinquish.  The Eagles finished with an impressive stat line with 4 players finishing in double digit scoring.  Anton Schülter led the way with 14 points, Tim Collins chipped in with 12 points, and Paul Pfeil added 10.  Seniors Marcel Spies (12 points) and Adrian Frank (2 points) played for the last time at GISNY and were outstanding in their farewell game.
The GISNY Modified teams record doesn’t reflect the great strides in improvement the young players made throughout the year.  They finished (1-5) but were also competitive in many tough losses.  They faced off against highly competitive private schools like Hackley, Harvey, and FASNY.  In the last game against FASNY JV, Fabian Pfeil showed promise for the future finishing with a team high 10 points.
It’s an exciting time for the basketball program as many players return to the team for next year.  In addition, the Interscholastic Sports department will look to grow it’s JR Eagles program again as it is important to learn the fundamentals at a young age.  Thank you to our flexible parents and teachers, our administration, and our family and friends who supported the program this year!
